MILTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team won its third straight contest and in the process tied the program's record for wins in a season with a 14-7 win at Curry. The win improves the Leopards' record to 9-2 overall, equaling the record set in 1999 and matched in 2004, and 3-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play.
Leopard junior Steve Glover paced the offense with five goals and an assist for a six-point afternoon. Curry was led by sophomore John Castellano (Scarsdale, N.Y.), who scored five points on two goals and three assists.
Sophomores Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) and Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) each netted two scores and helped with an assist. Freshman Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) netted a goal and chipped in with an assist for two points. Senior Mark Pappas (Worcester, Mass.) and junior Chris Kipp (Scarborough, Maine) rounded out the scoring for the Leopards with one goal. Freshman Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.) contributed with two assists and senior Connor Swanson (Holden, Mass.) and sophomore Dillon Lynch (Southwick, Mass.) had one helper for the Bloack & Gold.
Senior Andrew Navoni (Natick, Mass.) and sophomore Sean Ahern (Natick, Mass.) each finished the day with two points for the hosts. Navoni chipped in for two assists while Ahern netted one goal and had one assist. Senior Joseph Natale (Haverhill, Mass.), junior Harrison Foster (Saddle River, N.J.) and sophomores Connor McKeon (Larchmont, N.Y.) and John Donahoe (Wakefield, Mass.) each tallied one. The Leopards had six other scorers. Freshman Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) enjoyed a solid day contributing with four points on two goals and two assists. Two Wentworth players earned three points apiece.
Earning the win in the cage for Wentworth was junior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.), who made an impressive 14 saves allowing just seven goals. Senior Tim McGonagle (Concord, Mass.) was credited with the loss in net for the Colonels. McGonagle also made 14 stops allowing 14 goals.
The Leopards were the first to get on the board three minutes into the contest on an unassisted Cushera marker. Both teams held each other scoreless until the last two minutes of the quarter when three goals were scored. Wentworth fired one at the 1:42 minute mark when Coakley assisted Glover. The Colonels tallied their first with 30 seconds to play when Navoni connected with Castellano. Wentworth to a 3-1 lead before time expired when Parent scored his first of the game unassisted.
The Colonels cut the lead to one early in the second on another Castellano goal but the Leopards tallied the final two of the half to go up 5-2. Parent assisted Glover at 10:30 and Parlato found Paradis less than a minute later.
The third quarter saw 10 goals scored in 15 minutes of play. Wentworth outscored Curry 7-3 to head into the final frame with a demanding 12-5 lead. The Leopards netted the first six before the Colonels got two of their own within 32 seconds. Wentworth answered back but Curry fired the last to close out the quarter. The Leopards earned three scores from Glover, two by Glover and one from Parent and Cushera. The Colonels Donahoe, McKeon and Ahern got on the scoreboard for Curry.
Both teams netted two over the final 15 minutes. The Colonels tallied the first when Castellano assisted Natale and the last of the game on a Foster goal assisted by Navoni. The Leopards Pappas scored his lone goal of the day unassisted and Kipp finished for Wentworth on an assist from Cushera.
Curry (7-5, 0-4) returns to play on Saturday, April 13 as they travel for a CCC duel with Nichols College at 11:30 a.m. Wentworth will host non-conference opponent Weaton on Saturday, April 13 for a 7:00 p.m. game start.
