NEWPORT, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team rallied from a three-goal deficit to tie the game with 4:41 left in regulation, however, the Seahawks scored a goal 1:01 into the second overtime to take an 11-10 victory in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Salve Regina led, 3-2, after one quarter before Wentworth went on a 3-1 run in the second quarter to take a 6-4 lead. A late goal by Salve Regina cut the lead to 6-5 at the half.
The third quarter saw the Seahawks take a 9-7 lead and would extend their lead to 10-7 with a goal just 11 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Sophomores Dillon Lynch (Southwick, Mass.) and Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) pulled the Leopards to within a goal at 10-9 with 10:30 left and junior Steve Glover (Marstons Mills, Mass.) tied the game with 4:41 left. Neither team would score over the final 4:41, sending the game into overtime.
In the first overtime, junior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) made a pair of saves as both teams had chances to end the game. Salve Regina won the opening face off in the second extra frame and held the ball, scoring on its only shot of the quarter.
Freshman Alec Paradis (Windham, N.H.) had two goals and an assist, while Cushera and Glover had two goals apiece. Sophomore Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) also had a multiple-point game for the Leopards, scoring a goal and assisting on another. Coakley's 63 points this season are the second-highest single season total in program history.
Proulx made 30 saves and picked up five ground balls. Freshman Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.) picked up a team-high six ground balls in the loss, while senior Mike Sharpe (Needham, Mass.) won seven faceoffs.
Wentworth ends the regular season with a 10-5 record (3-5 Commonwealth Coast Conference) and is the number six seed for the upcoming CCC Tournament. The Leopards will travel to third-seeded Roger Williams on Saturday. Salve Regina stands at 7-9 (4-4) and will travel to fourth-seeded University of New England for a first-round contest on Saturday as well.
