BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) scored a pair of goals and assisted on four others to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team to its second straight win, an 11-6 victory over MIT in a non-conference contest played on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Leopards improve to 2-2 on the season while the Engineers slip to 2-2 with their second straight loss.
The Leopards scored the first two goals as Coakley fed sophomore Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) with 12:22 left in the opening frame and just over two minutes later Coakley would score an unassisted marker. The Engineers used a man-up goal with 3:27 left in the quarter from junior Chris Cook (Tully, N.Y.) and a goal from sophomore Paul Orrson (Baltimore, Md.) with 1:07 left to knot the score at 2-all after one quarter.
Wentworth would roll off the next seven goals, scoring four in the second and adding three in the third to take a 9-2 lead after three quarters. Sophomore Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.), senior Chris Kipp (Scarborough, Maine), and Parent scored in the second quarter while freshman Sam Bonsaint (Hampton, N.H.), freshman Mike Coakley (Flemington, N.J.), and Glover scored in the third. Glover's goal, coming with 45 seconds left, gave him 100 career points making him the ninth player in program history to reach the century mark.
MIT scored the first two goals of the final stanza as freshman Michael Traub (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and sophomore Luke Verdi (Middletown, Md.) scored less than a minute apart to make it a 9-4 game. Sophomore Alec Paradis (Pelham, Mass.) ended the spurt with a goal with 10:10 left, followed by Ryan Coakley's marker with 8:29 left. Traub scored the final MIT goals to round out the scoring.
In addition to Ryan Coakley's six points, Parent had two goals, while Glover, Kipp, and junior Dillon Lynch (Southwick, Mass.) had a goal and an assist each. Senior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) made 19 saves. Freshman Ty Trebbe (Wilbraham, Mass.) won 11 face-offs and had a game-high seven ground balls.
Traub led the Engineers with three goals and an assist while freshman Harris Stolzenberg (Weston, Fla.) had a pair of assists. Verdi had six ground balls and sophomore Eric Bartell (San Deigo, Calif.) made six saves. MIT held a 36-27 shot advantage.
