GEORGETOWN, Texas – For the second straight game senior Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) scored three goals and added a pair of assists, as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team defeated Southwestern University 9-8.
Coakley carried the Leopards in the first quarter by scoring all three goals for the Black and Gold. Sophomore Matthew Montagne (Fairfax, Va.) scored for the Pirates in the first.
Three minutes into the second, freshman Jordan Riggs (San Clemente, Calif.) scored to bring Southwestern within one. Junior Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) scored afterwards for the Leopards to make it 4-2, but freshman Parker Rankin (Dallas, Texas) scored for the Pirates to make it a one goal game (4-3) going into halftime.
Sophomore Mike Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) and senior Dillon Lynch (Southwick, Mass.) each scored in the third for the Leopards. Freshman Jake Ham (Rockwall, Texas) found the back of the net for Southwestern to bring his squad within two (6-4) going into the final quarter.
The offense stepped up for both sides in the final quarter. Wentworth went up by four goals after Dillon scored his second of the game with under six minutes remaining. Southwestern put together three straight goals in the final three minutes, with freshman Everett Barger (San Francisco, Calif.) scoring at 1:45 to bring the Pirates within one and had a shot at the end that went wide to give the Leopards their second straight one-goal game.
Lynch finished with a pair of goals while three players – sophomore Mike Coakley (Flemington, N.J.), junior Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.), and sophomore Sam Bonsaint (Hampton, N.H.) – each had a goal and an assist on the evening.
Wentworth scored on four of their nine man-up opportunities in the contest with Lynch providing two of the extra-man goals. Junior Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.) scooped up six ground balls with freshmen Adam Dufault and Jake Ollila (Goffstown, N.H.) picking up five each.
Dufault made 13 saves for the Leopards while his counterpart, junior Charlie Fisher (Memphis, Tenn.), also made 13. Wentworth had a slim, 32-30 edge in shots while ground balls were even at 35 apiece.
Wentworth (2-0) travels to MIT on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game.
