Coakley Paces Men's Lacrosse to Its Third Straight Win

MILTON, Mass. – Senior Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) scored a career-high six goals and tallied a game-high three assists for nine points, as the Wentworth institute of Technology men's lacrosse team defeated Curry 16-10 Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference at Katz Field.

Winners of three straight, the Leopards stand at 6-2 overall and 2-1 in CCC play while the Colonels are now 3-5 after dropping their conference opener.

After freshman Chris Bronander (Glen Ridge, N.J.) scored to give Curry a 1-0 lead 2:36 into the contest, Wentworth held Curry scoreless for the next 22 minutes. Coakley scored first for the Leopards to even the contest at one and classmate Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) put Wentworth on top, 2-1, with his goal. Back-to-back goals by junior Alec Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) put Wentworth up 4-1, and junior Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) wrapped up the first quarter scoring to make it 5-1.

Coakley scored a pair and both Cushera and Paradis scored before sophomore Joseph Grogan (Sandwich, Mass.) scored for Curry to make it 9-2 with 3:31 left in the half. Paradis scored his third with under two minutes left to put Wentworth up 10-2 after 30 minutes of action.

Back-to-back goals from Coakley in the third put the Leopards up 12-2 after three. Freshman Jake Ollila (Goffstown, N.H.) joined in on the scoring in the fourth to put Wentworth up 13-2. Parent and Coakley scored again to make it 15-2 with 11:55 remaining.

The Curry offense started to heat up in the fourth. Senior Ronald Jensen (Zionsville, Ind.) scored back-to-back goals to give Curry its third and fourth goals of the game. Freshmen Jeffrey Yates (Albany, N.Y.) and Matt Serra (Haverhill, Mass.) each scored, with Serra netting back-to-back goals to make it 15-7. Sophomore Brandon Flaim (Pembroke, Mass.) scored afterward to make it six straight for the Colonels. Senior Dillon Lynch (Southwick, Mass.) iced the Colonel hot streak with a goal to make the score 16-8. Sophomore Kevin Vincent (Ellington, Conn.) and Flaim scored in the final two minutes to round out the scoring.

Cushera and Coakley led with a game-high three assists while Cushera also scored a pair of goals. Paradis finished with four goals and two assists. Junior Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.) had six ground balls and caused three turnovers while sophomore Ty Trebbe (Wilbraham, Mass.) was 8-for-12 at the X.

Serra, Flaim, and Jensen each tallied two goals for the Colonels while Jensen also scooped up five ground balls and caused four turnovers.

Freshman Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.) made nine saves to pick up the win for the Leopards. Classmate Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) and sophomore Nick Miller (Malverne, N.Y.) each saw time between the pipes, making a save each. Senior Daniel Martin (Pittsfield, Mass.) made 15 saves to take the loss. Wentworth had advantages in shots (47-25) and ground balls (34-24).

Wentworth returns home Tuesday night to host conference foe Endicott at 7 p.m. Curry hits the road Tuesday afternoon, as the Colonels travel to Nichols for a conference game of their own.
