BOTSON, Mass. – In his collegiate debut, freshman Dolan McCarthy (Hyde Park, Mass.) scored four goals and assisted on four others to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team to a season-opening, 17-6 win over Dean College in a non-conference contest played at Sweeney Field.
In addition to McCarthy's eight points, sophomore Kevin Butler (Jefferson, Mass.) found the back of the net five times, freshman Mark Howland (Lititz, Pa.) and sophomore Jack Zaylor (Hanover, Mass.), each had a pair of goals, freshman Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had three helpers, and senior Mike Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) had a goal and an assist to round out the multiple-point scorers.
Sophomores Jason Buck (Manulis, N.Y.) and Matt Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) and freshman Riley Smith (Plaistow, N.H.) had single goals.
The Bulldogs got on the board first when senior Ben Sykes (Londonderry, N.H.) scored from junior Marcus Richardson (Newton, Mass.) 2:12 into the contest. Wentworth responded with three straight goals – two of which came from Butler – to take a 3-1 lead with 3:19 left in the quarter.
A seven-goal second quarter broke the game open for the Leopards who took a 10-3 lead at the break. Zaylor and Butler had four of the seven markers in the frame while McCarthy had two assists.
Four different players scored goals in the third quarter for the Black & Gold, including McCarthy who also had an assist as Wentworth led, 10-3, after three quarters. Coakley had a goal and an assist in the fourth quarter to help round out the scoring.
Sophomore Peter Andersson (Madison, N.J.) was 18-of-23 at the X and collected 10 ground balls. Freshman Jake Berry (Beverly, Mass.) had three caused turnovers. Howland finished with five ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers in addition to his pair of goals.
