Strong Third Quarter Lifts Men's Lacrosse Past St. Joseph's

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Spencer Allen (New Boston, N.H.) scored four goals and added an assist and freshman Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had three goals and two assists to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team to a 16-6 victory over St. Joseph's (Maine) College in a non-conference contest Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Leopards improve to 4-1 on the year while the Monks fall to 0-3.

Allen and Doner's five-point afternoons were joined by sophomore Jason Buck (Manlius, N.Y.), who had three goals, junior Kevin Butler (Jefferson, Mass.), who had three goals and three assists, and sophomore Chris Quinn (Newton, Mass.), who had a goal and two assists, as Wentworth players scoring multiple points.

The Leopards scored the only goals of the first quarter with Doner, Allen, and Buck providing the offense as the Black & Gold scored their goals in a span of a little over three minutes.

St. Joseph's pulled within a goal, scoring twice in a span of just under three minutes early in the second quarter with sophomores Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) and Peter Wood (Gloucester, Mass.) finding the back of the net. Wentworth scored the next three to take a 6-2 lead at the break as Allen tallied twice to go along with single markers from Butler and senior Sean Farmer (Billerica, Mass.) while Doner had two assists.

Allen made it a 7-2 game with a goal 1:06 into the second half before Sophomore Tyler Retalic (Framingham, Mass.) brought the lead back to four with 12:29 left. Wentworth broke the game open by scoring the next six goals to take a 13-3 lead after three quarters. Butler had a goal and an assist during this stretch.

Sophomore Dan Cunningham (West Islip, N.Y.) ended the Monks' scoring drought of 14:18 when he opened the fourth quarter with a goal, however Doner, Allen, and Buck scored for Wentworth before a pair of late Finn goals concluded the scoring.

In addition to his five points, Allen also scooped up six ground balls. Framer led all players with 11 ground balls. Freshman Tim Phillips (Westwood, Mass.) was 13-of-21 at the X and also picked up six ground balls while freshman Jake Berry (Beverly, Mass.) and senior Eric Iacaboni (Sterling, Mass.) caused a pair of turnovers each.

Finn led the Monks with three goals and six ground balls. Sophomore Raymond Emery (Abington, Mass.) caused four turnovers.

All four of Wentworth's goalies saw action. Junior Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.)  made eight saves in 47:25 of action, junior Scott Boucher (Salisbury, N.H.) made one save in 6:16 of work, sophomore Isaac Rico (Scarborough, Maine) didn't need to make a save in 3:19, and freshman Tyler Carson (West Hartford, Conn.) made one save over the final three minutes. Junior Wyatt Porter (Pittsfield, Mass.) made 11 saves in 38:13 of work before giving way to junior Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) who made four saves over the final 21:47. Wentworth had advantages in shots (55-22) and ground balls (48-32).

The Leopards host Lasell on Tuesday night.
