BOSTON, Mass. – Junior midfielder Chris Stone (Drexel Hill, Pa.) scored three goals and added an assist to help the Western New England University men's lacrosse team pick up a 12-3 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Golden Bears improve to 6-9 overall and 6-1 in league play while the Leopards drop to 6-9 (1-6).
Stone was one of four players to score goals in a span of 4:35 as Western New England jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Eighteen seconds after senior Frank Medlicott (Stanwood, Wash.) put the visitors ahead 4-0, Wentworth got on the board on a goal from senior Sean Farmer (Billerica, Mass.).
The Golden Bears responded with five straight goals, keeping the Leopards off the board until a freshman Riley Smith (Plaistow, N.H.) goal with 6:59 left in the third quarter made it 9-2. During the Western New England run Stone and junior Nicholas Beauchamp (Wilbraham, Mass.) each had two goals and an assist.
Smith added his second of the game with just under 10 minutes remaining in the contest before Western New England tacked on a pair of goals to round out the scoring.
Beauchamp finished with two goals and an assist and also caused two turnovers, Medlicott had a pair of goals, and sophomore Tim Breau (Lima, N.Y.) and senior Keegan Dudeck (Longmeadow, Mass.) each had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Hunter Cocks (Walden, N.Y.) won 12-of-17 at the X and scooped up six ground balls.
Smith had two of the Leopards' three goals on the day while senior Eric Iacaboni (Sterling, Mass.) caused a pair of turnovers. Junior Adam Dufault (Lexington, Mass.), freshman Kilian Ryan (Saranac Lake, N.Y.), and sophomore Zach Tomaszek (Milford, Conn.) each picked up three ground balls.
Junior Steven Kerr (Hopkinton, Mass.) made eight saves in the win while also scooping up five ground balls. Freshman Sean McCusker (Northport, N.Y.) played the final 4:13 and made two saves. Dufault made 12 saves in the loss.
Western New England had a 36-25 shot advantage and a 34-27 edge in ground balls while successfully clearing 19 of 23 attempts.
Both teams wrap up the regular season on Tuesday. Wentworth is at Roger Williams and Western New England hosts Salve Regina.
