Men's Lacrosse Edged by Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Senior Devin Newell (Medford, Mass) scored two goals and added an assist – all in the fourth quarter – to help the Curry College men's lacrosse team rally for a 7-5 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Wednesday afternoon.

With the win the Colonels improve to 4-5 overall and even their record at 1-1 in league play while the Leopards fall to 3-8 (0-2).

Senior Matt Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) scored the first quarter's lone goal as he found the back of the net off a feed from junior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) to give Wentworth a 1-0 lead.

Curry scored three times in a span of 3:26 early in the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead, thanks to single markers from sophomore Matthew Schmill (Gales Ferry, Conn.), junior Kyle Ton (Norwich, Conn.), and sophomore Matthew Henderson (Scarborough, Maine). Goals from Leopard sophomore Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) and freshman Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) at 8:27 and 4:11, respectively, evened the score at 3-all before junior Harrison Fallon (Wrentham, Mass.) gave the hosts a 4-3 lead with 52 seconds left in the half.

Doner set up freshman Calvin McKenna (Seattle, Wash.) with 4:52 left to even the score at 4-all with 4:52 left in the third quarter while Coakley netted an unassisted goal with 94 seconds left in the frame to give the Black & Gold a 5-4 lead after three quarters.

A minute and 31 seconds into the fourth quarter, Newell evened the score at 5-all, and, after Curry won the ensuing faceoff, Newell fed Ton, giving the Colonels a 6-5 lead merely eight seconds later. Late in the game, Curry put a shot on goal which was saved by sophomore Randy Ryan (Clinton, N.J.). Senior Jake Berry (Beverly, Mass.) picked up the ground ball, however, Wentworth was unable clear the ball which gave the Colonels the ball back with 1:51 left. Newell added an insurance goal – from Fallon – with 32 seconds left.

In addition to Newell, Ton had two goals while Fallon had a goal and an assist. Senior Zach White (Milford, Conn.) was 8-of-15 at the X and scooped up four ground balls, including the one which led to the go-ahead goal, while sophomore Clinton Wilson (Freehold, N.J.) caused three turnovers.

Coakley led the Leopards with two goas while Doner had two assists. Freshman Erik Madden (Wolfeboro, N.H.) collected a game-high five ground balls).

Freshman Bobby Cannan (Bernardsville, N.J.) made seven saves in the second half to pick up the win. Senior Josh Teller (Milford, Conn.) made five saves in the first half. Ryan stopped a career-high 21 shots for Wentworth. Curry had advantages in shots (49-34) and ground balls (37-27).

Wentworth hosts Nichols on Saturday.
