Men's Lacrosse Picks up First League Win

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) had seven points, coming on two goals and five assists to lead four players with five or more points as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team picked up a 16-10 win over Nichols in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.

The Leopards, who halted a two-game losing streak, improve to 4-8 overall and 1-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play, while the Bison fall to 4-3 (0-2).

Nichols scored three of the game's first four goals, beginning with a marker from senior Jack Campanale (Shrewsbury, Mass.) 1:26 into the contest. Sophomore Brendan Coates (Grafton, Mass.) and freshman Hunter Ferreira (Mansfield, Mass.) also scored for the Bison while sophomore Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) scored for the Wentworth. The Leopards used a 5-0 run to take a 6-3 lead with 5:06 left in the opening quarter. Coakley, sophomore Andrew DiPalma (West Orange, N.J.), senior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.), freshman Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.), and Doner each scored for the Black & Gold. Ferreira ended the run and made it 6-5 after one quarter with a goal with 29 seconds left.

Senior Matt Larsen (Northborough, Mass.) and Eldred scored 2:33 apart, giving Wentworth an 8-5 lead. Senior Brian Davidson (New Milford, Conn.) made it 8-6 with a goal at the 11:26 mark before Ferreira scored to bring Nichols within a goal at 3:45.

Scoring the first four goals of the third quarter, Wentworth extended its lead to 12-8 with 2:07 left in the quarter. Eldred tallied twice during that span while Larsen and Prunier each had a single goal. The Bison trimmed the lead to 12-9 on a senior Matt O'Connell (Woburn, Mass.) goal with 27 seconds left in the third quarter.

Two goals by Coakley along with single markers from Prunier and Doner were sandwiched around a Ferreira goal, allowing Wentworth to extend its lead in the final quarter.

In addition to Doner, Prunier had three goals and three assists, Coakley had four goals and two assists, and Eldred had four goals and an assist. DiPalma finished with a goal and two assists while Larsen added a pair of goals. Freshman Radu Stancescu (Suffern, N.Y.) was 13-of-15 at the X and collected seven ground balls. Sophomore Danny Bartosiewicz (North Grafton, Mass.) caused five turnovers and picked up six ground balls.

Ferreira led the Bison with four goals and six ground balls.

Sophomore Randy Ryan (Clinton, N.J.) made 13 saves while senior Brian McKinley (Nashua, N.H.) made 16 stops for Nichols. Wentworth had advantages in shots (48-35 and ground balls (37-35) as well as going 4-for-5 in extra-man opportunities.

Wentworth is at the University of New England on Tuesday night.
