BIDDEFORD, Maine – Five players scored multiple points, including junior Kyle Doner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) who had two goals and two assists, as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team defeated the University of New England, 14-9, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Tuesday night.
Winners of two straight and three of their last five, Wentworth improves to 5-8 overall and even their league record at 2-2. The Nor'Easters slip to 5-6 (0-2).
A pair of senior Mitch Mullin (Cumberland, Maine) goals sandwiched around a freshman Sam Prunier (Hollis, N.H.) marker gave the hosts a 2-1 lead with 8:29 left in the opening quarter. From there, Wentworth went on a 5-0 run with Doner and senior Jacob Eldred (Goffstown, N.H.) combining to score for of the five and sophomore Andrew DiPalma (West Orange, N.J.) netting the other. DiPalma's goal gave the Leopards a 6-2 lead at the 13:16 mark of the second quarter.
Junior Garrett Bozek (Nashua, N.H.) ended the run with a man-up goal with 11:07 left in the half as the teams traded markers throughout the remainder of the half. Mullin's goal with 4:32 left brought the hosts within three (8-5) at the break.
The Black & Gold extended their lead in the third quarter by scoring four straight to make it 12-5. Sophomore Ben Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) scored two of the four goals in the frame while Buck and Prunier each found the back of the net once. UNE cut the lead to four (13-9) with 4:53 remaining, however, were unable to get any closer and a freshman Erik Madden (Wolfeboro, N.H.) goal with 13 seconds left completed the scoring.
In addition to Doner, Coakley scored three goals while senior Jason Buck (Manlius, N.Y.), Prunier, and Eldred each tallied twice. Sophomore Danny Bartosiewicz (North Grafton, Mass.) scooped up 10 ground balls while sophomore Tom Rockwell (Andover, Mass.) went 13-of-21 at the X.
Mullin led all scorers with five goals while junior Adam Race (Cazenovia, N.Y.) picked up seven ground balls.
Sophomore Randy Ryan (Clinton, N.J.) made 17 saves in 58:41 of action. Freshman Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) saw his first 1:19 of action of the season. Junior Sam McKenzie (Worthington, Ohio) made seven saves for UNE. The Nor'Easters had a 41-27 shot advantage while the Leopards had the edge in ground balls, 41-33. Wentworth was successful in its only man-up situation while also killing off 9-of-10 shorthanded situations.
Wentworth hosts Endicott on Saturday.
