Novice Four Victory Paces Rowing's Strong Showing

DERBY, Conn. – Paced by a first-place finish from a boat in the novice four race, the Wentworth Institute of technology rowing team had a solid showing at the Head of the Housatonic Regatta on Saturday.

In addition to the first-place finish, the Leopards also had a third-place finish in the non-IRA collegiate fours.

Wentworth began the day with an entry in the collegiate novice eight race. Sophomore Coxswain Kristian Hosker (Nahant, Mass.), freshman Tyler Brinson (Lowell, Mass.), freshman Liam Jacques (Medford, Mass.), freshman Joshua Tremblay (Lowell, Mass.), junior Jacob L'Heureux (Sanford, Maine), freshman James Bednar (Kansas City, Mo.), sophomore Travis Worrick (Plymouth, Mass.), freshman Sepehr Khansalar (Cambridge, Mass.), and sophomore Conall Sullivan (Jacksonville, Vt.) finished fifth out of eight boats with a time of 15:25.7. The Leopards beat a pair of Division I schools in the race in West Point (sixth) and Connecticut (eighth).

The collegiate novice fours race saw the Leopards race a pair of boats. Freshman coxswain Sara Anderson (Manchester, N.H.), Brinson, Khansalar, freshman Dylan Ryan (Belmont, Mass.), and freshman Bohdan Ruehle (Kinnelon, N.J.) took first place with a time of 15:40.1, which was first among the seven-boat race. Wentworth defeated Fordham (15:44.1) and Connecticut (16:04.5).

Wentworth's second entry in the race was led by sophomore coxswain Leslie Vongphakdy (Riverside, R.I.), Trembay, Bednar, freshman John Speight (Island Park, N.Y.), and freshman Cameron Labrecque (Bedford, N.H.) and finished sixth in the field with a time of 18:07.6.

In the 16-boat, non-IRA collegiate four race, Wentworth raced a pair of boats as well. Freshman coxswain Jocelyn Frechette (Dracut, Mass.), sophomore Karlis Kaza (Wayland, Mass.), junior Alec Boyle (Shirley, Mass.), junior Logan O'Donnell (Killingworth, Conn., and junior Matt West (Hingham, Mass.) placed third with a time of 15:21.0. The Leopards' first entry was behind Boston College and Fairfield.

Freshman coxswain Emily Seslar (Plymouth, Mass.), junior Padraic O'Sullivan (Upton, Mass.), junior Kyle Rowe (Eliot, Maine), junior Dylan McGuinness (Methuen, Mass.), and sophomore TJ Dion (Lincoln, R.I.) were 11th with a time of 16:13.8 and beat a pair of boats from the University of Connecticut and one each from Fairfield and Iona.

Wentworth next competes on Oct. 15 at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta.
