BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior captain Mike Fisher (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Telvin Lopes (Pawtucket, R.I.) each scored twice and Babson College used three early goals to open its season with a 5-1 victory of Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference men's soccer action on Friday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Fisher opened the scoring for Babson just 7:19 into the game by taking a perfect cross from senior Thomas Elbling (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and burying a header inside the left post for a 1-0 advantage. Lopes then struck for his first goal of the year just over two minutes later when he got a foot on a cross by junior Shawn Citro (Oakland, N.J.) to double the Babson lead. Fisher would give the hosts a 3-0 lead at the 22:02 mark with his second goal of the day off a feed from fellow senior Kevin Israel (Lafayette Hill, Pa.).
The Green and White put the game out of reach for good with a pair of tallies early in the second half. Junior Brenden Matthews (Marlborough, Mass.) connected on a 20-yard free kick that slipped through the hands of Wentworth senior goalkeeper Cody Gibb (Foster, R.I.) in the 47th minute, and Lopes added his second goal of the day just five minutes later to push the lead to 5-0.
The Leopards got on the board at the 75:19 mark when a cross from junior Daniel Cubelli (Norwood, Mass.) deflected off a Babson defender and inside the near post to make the final score 5-1.
Senior Jackson Klein (Maplewood, N.J.) and sophomore Stephen Donato (Morganville, N.J.) combined to make one stop for the Beavers while Gibb and first-year Chase Richard (Smithfield, R.I.) also made one save.
Babson held a 15-5 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Beavers (1-0) return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host Husson at 2 pm while Wentworth (0-1) will travel to Norton, Mass., to take on Wheaton in a 3 p.m. start.
