Men's Soccer Snaps Winless Streak

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Max Hilchuk (Wethersfield, Conn.) scored a pair of goals and added an assist as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's score team scored three unanswered goals in a span of 14:24 to hand Roger Williams its first loss with a 3-1 win in the Commonwealth Coast Confernece opener for both teams.

The win snapped a 15-match winless streak (0-12-3) for the Leopards, who won for the first time in exactly 52 weeks, having defeated Eastern Nazarene, 4-0, on September 15, 2012, for their only win of the 2012 campaign. Additionally, the win was the first for first-year head coach Connor Erickson.

Roger Williams got on the board first when senior Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine) took a pass from classmate Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) and made a long run along the right side. His shot across the box eluded freshman keeper Chase Richard (Smithfield, R.I.) at 25:28.

Hilchuk netted his first of the game at 31:45 when classmate Sam Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) served a free kick through the box and Hilchuk put home a shot to the left side. A minute and 15 seconds later, sophomore Arberi Ferraj (Moosup, Conn.) took a feed from Hilchuk and buried a one-timer to the left side.

Just 1:09 into the second half, Hilchuk capitalized on a Hawk defensive miscue, adding an insurance goal when he picked up his third marker of the season.

Roger Williams had chances to cut the lead, however would only put one shot on goal in the second half.

Richard made four saves, while senior Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) made five stops for the Hawks. Shots (13-13) and corner kicks (4-4) were even for the game.

Wentworth improves to 1-5 (1-0 CCC) and is idle until traveling to Nichols next Saturday. Roger Williams (5-1, 0-1) hosts MIT Wednesday night.
