BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Erik Johansen (West Harrison, N.Y.) scored three goals and junior Jordan Santos (Middlebury, Conn.) had three assists as the Lesley University men's soccer team scored three times in the second half to break a 1-1 stalemate and defeat Wentworth Institute of Technology, 4-2, in non-conference action on Sweeney Field.
The Leopards took a 1-0 lead at the 9:31 mark when junior Erik Shaw (Hooksett, N.H.) made a long run and fed senior Devin Richard (Smithfield, R.I.) just inside the box. Richard placed a shot inside the right post, just past Lynx sophomore keeper Chase Donley (Elizabethtown, Pa.).
Lesley tied the game at 1-all at 28:26 when sophomore Walker Panek (Carlsbad, Calif.) curled a direct kick from 20 yards out to the upper left corner. The game would remain tied through the half with Wentworth holding an 11-6 shot advantage.
Johansen scored the next three goals – all assisted by Santos. At 50:30 Johansen score on a shot from the top of the box to give the Lynx a 2-1 lead while 2:40 later he fired a blast from 35 yards out to increase the lead to 3-1. Johansen would connect on a one-timer at 61:45 to make it a 4-1 game.
The Leopards pulled within two with 6:38 left when junior Daniel Cubelli (Norwood, Mass.) scored on a pass from classmate Bobby Tzaneros (Succasunna, N.J.) but would get no closer.
Donley made four saves in 78:39 of work for Lesley before sophomore Trevor Martin (Whitinsville, Mass.) played the final 11:21. Freshman Chase Richard (Smithfield, R.I.) made three saves. Each team was credited with a team save/ The Leopards held a 16-14 shot advantage and were awarded the game's only two corner kicks.
With the win Lesley runs its unbeaten streak to three (2-0-1), improving to 6-3-2. The Lynx host Newbury on October 8. Wentworth falls to 1-9 and hosts Curry on Saturday at Noon.
