Men's Soccer Halts Losing Streak

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Alec Watkinson (Merrimack, N.H.) and freshman Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) each scored goals while freshman Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine) made four saves to post his third shutout of the season as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team sanpped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over Lesley in non-conference action at Sweeney Field.

With the win the Leopards improve to 7-3 while the Lynx fall to 2-7.

Wentworth wasted little time getting on the board as Watkinson deposited his third goal of the season at 4:57. Watkinson headed in a corner kick from the nearside flag from senior Alberto Benhamu (Caracas, Venezuela).

Following their initial strike, the Leopards continued to pester Lesley's backline and sophomore goalie James Webb (San Francisco, Calif.) with eight shots, but none landed in the back of the net. Lesley's offense came to life later in the session as junior Chris Anderson (San Francisco, Calif.) and sophomore Anthony Vitta (Oceanside, N.Y.) each fired one shot, but neither attempt got past Sekerak.

Lesley, which trailed by one goal entering the second half, attempted to even the match with back-to-back shots by Vitta, but both attempts were denied by Sekerak 54:24 and 56:49, respectively. Vitta would have another opportunity to locate the back of the net off a free kick, but his attempt sailed just over the cross bar at 67:11.

Wentworth added an insurance goal at 78:20 as Martins headed in a cross from senior Sam Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) into the right corner of the Lesley net. The Lynx did not register a single shot following the marker, while Wentworth recorded a pair of tries, but neither shot landed in the Lesley net.

The Leopards concluded the match with 24 shots and a season-high 11 corner kicks. The Lynx tallied eight shots and recorded just one corner in the second half. Sekerak finished with four stops, while Lesley senior Trevor Martin (Whitinsville, Mass.) and Webb combined for 13 saves.

Wentworth travels to Salve Regina for a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) on Saturday, October 4 at 12:00 p.m., while Lesley is back in action on Monday, October 5 when they host Rivier at 8:00 p.m.
