Martins Nets Pair in Men's Soccer's Season-Opening Win

NORTON, Mass. – Sophomore Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals, including what held up as the game winner with 14:42 remaining as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team started the 2016 season on the right foot with a 2-1 win over Wheaton.

The host Lyons put four shots on net in a span of 13:46 in the early stages of the contest, however all were denied by sophomore keeper Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine). The Leopards' first shot didn't come until the 20th minute of play and the Black & Gold's first shot on net came when Martins scored at 25:34 off a feed from junior Kenneth Callahan (Killingworth, Conn.).

In the 43rd minute Wheaton had a chance to tie the score off a corner kick, however the shot attempt was blocked. Martins almost gave Wentworth a 2-0 lead in the waning seconds of the first half but his bid went wide.

The Lyons had another chance in the 54th minutes, again off a corner kick, however the bid was once again blocked. The two teams went back and forth until the 75:18 mark when sophomore Stephen Frazier (Bedford, Mass.) set up Martins for his second of the game.

Wheaton pulled back within a goal just under four minutes later when sophomore Adam Waks (Acton, Mass.) scored off a feed from junior Sean Hurlburt (Kingston, Mass.). However, that would be as close as the hosts would come.

Sekerak made seven saves in the win while junior James Bailey (Groton, Mass.) didn't make a save in the loss. Wheaton had a 19-8 shot advantage and took four of the game's six corner kicks.

Wentworth has its home opener on Saturday against UMass Boston at 10:00 a.m.
