BOSTON, Mass. – Three different players scored goals and junior Joshua Khang (Brockton, Mass.) added a pair of assists to help pace the University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference contest Saturday morning on Sweeney Field.
The Beacons improve to 2-0 on the young season with the triumph while the Leopards suffer their first loss, falling to 1-1.
Early in the contest the hosts had a chance to break the ice, however junior Matt Cicalis' (Bridgewater, Mass.) bid was denied by freshman Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I). Wentworth would have another chance in the 14th minute, however sophomore Noah Martins' shot went wide of the goal.
The contest remained scoreless for the remainder of the first half with UMass Boston having several chances to take the lead. The Beacons had a 12-4 shot advantage with three of those shots saved by sophomore Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine) and another cleared out by a backline defender off a corner kick in the 43rd minute.
UMass Boston got the only goal it would need at the 51:06 mark as Khang sent a pass from the right side through the box where senior Edmilson Barros (Praia, Cape Verde) put home a shot to the left side. Nearly 20 minutes later Barros set up freshman Ocane Williamson (Spanishtown St. Catherine, Jamaica) who chipped a shot over Sekerak's head at 70:29.
The Beacons rounded out the scoring with 4:28 to play as Khang sent a pass to the center of the box where freshman Jake Davenport (Weymouth, Mass.) put home a low shot to the right side.
Castro-Dreher made three saves to record the shutout while Sekerak turned aside eight shots. UMass Boston had a 25-8 shot advantage and both teams took three corner kicks.
Wentworth heads to Lasell tomorrow afternoon for a 12:00 contest.
