BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored a goal and assisted on two others to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Emmanuel Tuesday night on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Leopards snap a three-game (0-1-2) winless streak and improve to 3-2-2 while the Saints fall to 2-2-1 on the season.
Martins got the hosts on the board at the 9:57 mark when he netted his fourth marker of the season. After a foul, junior Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.) served a free kick towards the box where Martins flicked a header past freshman Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.).
The one-goal lead stayed until the 41:34 mark when Martins possessed the ball near the end line and sent a pass to the middle of the box where freshman Drew DeCoste (Somerset, Mass.) put in a shot to the right side. Wentworth had a 16-5 advantage in shots at the break.
Emmanuel cut the lead in half early in the second half when sophomore Alex DeSaulnier (Wilbraham, Mass.) netted his fifth goal of the season. A Leopard foul set up a free kick by junior Cameron Messier (Belchertown, Mass.). Messier served the kick into the box where DeSaulnier headed the ball past sophomore Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine).
Wentworth got some breathing room in the 54th minute, thanks to senior Alec Watkinson's (Merrimack, N.H.) first goal of the season. Martins sent in a cross from the right side where Watkinson fired a shot from right to left which deflected off Ferrarini's hands. The Leopards rounded out the scoring at 88:33 on a junior Matt Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) goal, which was set up by DeCoste.
Sekerak made seven saves for Wentworth while Ferrarini made nine. The Leopards had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Wentworth opens Commonwealth Coast Conference play on Friday night at Roger Williams while Emmanuel hosts Newbury on Saturday.
