BRISTOL, R.I. – Sophomore James Morrison (New South Wales, Australia) recorded the game's only goal, a golden goal in the 97th minute, to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Roger Williams in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest Friday evening.
With the win the Leopards improve to 4-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in league play while the Hawks fall to 1-5-1 (0-1-1).
Wentworth had an early bid when junior Michael Zendan's (Charlotte, N.C.) fed sophomore Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.), however Martins' bid just missed the mark. The Leopards controlled play for the majority of the first half and had a 3-1 shot advantage at the break.
In the early part of the second half, the Leopards controlled possession and had numerous chances to break the tie, however freshman keeper Edmund Geschickter (Brookline, Mass.) came up with four saves in the second half. In the 87th minute, the Black & Gold nearly took the lead, however a bid was cleared out by a back line defender to keep the contest scoreless.
Overtime saw the Leopards have a 3-0 shot advantage and the visitors nearly won the game in the 95th minute, however junior Emmett Basaca's (San Diego, Calif.) hit the top of the left post.
Nearly two minutes later the Leopards walked off Bayside Field victorious for the first time since 2009 when Morrison provided the heroics. A Roger Williams foul set up a free kick where Zendan tapped the ball back to Morrison. Morrison put a shot on net which was deflected by Geschickter but rolled into the lower left corner to end the game.
Sophomore Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine) only needed one save to earn the shutout win, as the Leopards held the Hawks to only three shots on the night. Geschickter made five stops in the loss. Wentworth had a 20-3 shot advantage while corner kicks were even at three apiece.
Both teams are in action on Wednesday at Wentworth is at MIT and Roger Williams hosts Wheaton.
