Men's Soccer Goes on Offensive in Win Over MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Sophomore Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) recorded a hat trick and assisted on a fourth goal as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team outlasted MIT, 5-3, in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Steinbrenner Stadium.

With the win the Leopards improve to 5-2-2 on the season while the Engineers fall to 4-2-0.

The visitors wasted little time getting on the board when Martins took a shot which was saved by freshman keeper Jeremy Cowham (Quincy, Mass.). The rebound came out to junior Joe Kalil (Franklin, Mass.) who scored at 6:38. Wentworth took a 2-0 lead at the 33:01 mark when Kalil sent a cross from the end line to Martins who found the bottom right of the net.

MIT sliced the lead in half at the 52:58 mark when freshman Isaac Perper (Tiburon, Calif.) took a shot which was initially saved by sophomore Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine), however the rebound came back to Perper who put the second chance home.

Less than eight minutes later Martins made it a 3-1 game when junior Michael Zendan (Charlotte, N.C.) sent a long pass through the middle where Martins collected the ball and beat Cowham.

Once again, the Engineers cut the lead to a goal when junior Gregory Hui (Oakland, Calif.) scored off a feed from senior Kareem Itani (Dallas, Texas) at 79:31. Sophomore James Morrison (New South Wales, Australia) scored off a feed from freshman Joe Limoli at 80:57 to make it 4-2 and Martins drove down the sideline and scored to the top left corner at 87:36.

Just 21 seconds late MIT closed out the scoring when sophomore Wesley Woo (Palo Alto, Calif.) was able to find the back of the net on a pads by Perper.

Sekerak made six saves for Wentworth. Cowham made three saves in just over 66 minutes for the Engineers while sophomore Travis Leathrum (Chesapeake, Va.) made a pair of saves in relief over the final 23:40. MIT had a 25-19 shot advantage and Wentworth had a 6-2 edge on corner kicks.
