BOSTON, Mass. – Four different players tallied goals and sophomore Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) picked up his third shutout of the season as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team extended its program-record unbeaten streak to 12 (8-0-4) with a 4-0 victory over Eastern Nazarene in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Wednesday evening.
With the win the Leopards improve to 10-2-4 overall and maintain the top spot in the CCC standings with a 6-0-1 record. The Lions fall to 5-9-2 (1-6-0).
Both teams had opportunities in the early going, however neither could capitalize on scoring chances.
At 34:49, Wentworth got the only goal it would need when junior senior Alec Watkinson (Merrimack, N.H.) put home his second of the season. Junior Michael Zendan (Charlotte, N.C.) set up Watkinson with a pass along the left side and Watkinson buried the shot to the upper right corner. The game would remain 1-0 in favor of the Leopards, who had a 10-4 shot advantage in the opening 45 minutes.
Wentworth scored three times in the second half to break the game open. An Eastern Nazarene foul set up a free kick for the Leopards. Junior Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.) served the kick towards the box where classmate Joe Kalil (Franklin, Mass.) one-timed it inside the right post.
Sophomore Noah Martins added to his team-leading goal total in the 61st minute when he scored his 12th of the season. Off a corner kick, classmate James Morrison (New South Wales, Australia) came up with a loose ball and set up Martins at the top of the box, who put a shot inside the right post.
Freshman Diego Panayotti (San Pedro Sula, Honduras) netted his first collegiate goa, at 76:29 to round out the scoring as freshman Griffin Price (Allendale, N.J.) fed him just inside the box where he placed a shot to the upper left corner.
Schallmo made five saves in the win. Freshman Victor Mendoza (Cathedral, Calif.) made 12 saves to take the loss. Wentworth had advantages in shots (27-9) and corner kicks (6-2).
Wentworth hosts Endicott on Saturday afternoon while Eastern Nazarene hosts Nichols Friday night.
