Martins' Late Goal Lifts Men's Soccer Past UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Sophomore Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) scored with 5:44 remaining to give the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team a 2-1 win over the University of New England in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match played Tuesday night.

With the win the Leopards improve to 11-3-4 overall and finish CCC play with a 7-1-1 record, good for the number two seed in the upcoming CCC Tournament. The Black & Gold will host a quarterfinal round contest on Saturday afternoon against an opponent to be announced on Wednesday night. The Nor'Easters end their season at 3-11-4 (1-7-1).

Martins notched his conference-leading 13th marker of the season (third game winner) late in the contest off an assist from senior Alec Watkinson (Merrimack, N.H.). UNE sophomore keeper Nate Delesdernier (Niantic, Conn.) punted the ball towards midfield where Watkinson won the ball and headed it towards the top of the box. Martins raced through the defense to and beat Delesdernier, who had come out to try and make a play on the ball.

Wentworth scored the lone goal of the first half when junior Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.) sent the ball across the box from the right side to Watkinson, who was on the left side of the goal. Watkinson one-timed the feed just inside the right post to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead at 36:11. The Leopards held an 8-3 shot advantage in the first half.

Junior Nick Paine (Dartmouth, Mass.) evened the score at the 66:36 mark off an assist from junior Dexter Doucet (Newmarket, N.H.). Wentworth attempted to clear a Nor'Easter throw-in, however Doucet headed the ball to Paine who found the top left corner of the net to even the score.

In the 78th minute Doucet nearly gave UNE the lead, however sophomore Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) made his only save of the game when he dove to deny Doucet in the 80th minute.

Delesdernier made five saves for the Nor'Easters. Wentworth had advantages in shots (18-9) and corner kicks (10-1).
