BOSTON, Mass. – Four different players scored goals and junior Guilherme Barbosa (Saugus, Mass.) had a pair of assists to help pace the 15th-ranked University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference men's soccer match played on Sweeney Field.
With the win the Beacons improve to 2-0-2 on the season while the Leopards fall to 2-3-0.
The hosts applied pressure early and had a corner kick in the sixth minute of play. The shot off the corner from freshman Juan Cedeno (North Andover, Mass.) was saved by sophomore Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.). In the 17th minute UMass Boston senior Daniel Morales (San Diego, Calif.) went in on a breakaway, however was denied by junior Mathew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine).
UMass Boston broke the ice at the 27:14 mark on a goal from junior Denis Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.). Freshman Mauricio Martinez (Revere, Mass.) sent a pass to Denis Martinez who fired a shot from 30 yards out and beat junior Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.).
Wentworth tied the game with 4:17 left in the half. Junior Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) took a shot which hit the right post. The rebound ricocheted out to senior Joe Kalil (Norwood, Mass.) who netted his first of the season.
