Second Half Run Lifts UMass Boston Past Men's Soccer

BOSTON, Mass. – Four different players scored goals and junior Guilherme Barbosa (Saugus, Mass.) had a pair of assists to help pace the 15th-ranked University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in a non-conference men's soccer match played on Sweeney Field.

With the win the Beacons improve to 2-0-2 on the season while the Leopards fall to 2-3-0.

The hosts applied pressure early and had a corner kick in the sixth minute of play. The shot off the corner from freshman Juan Cedeno (North Andover, Mass.) was saved by sophomore Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.). In the 17th minute UMass Boston senior Daniel Morales (San Diego, Calif.) went in on a breakaway, however was denied by junior Mathew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine).

UMass Boston broke the ice at the 27:14 mark on a goal from junior Denis Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.). Freshman Mauricio Martinez (Revere, Mass.) sent a pass to Denis Martinez who fired a shot from 30 yards out and beat junior Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.).

Wentworth tied the game with 4:17 left in the half. Junior Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) took a shot which hit the right post. The rebound ricocheted out to senior Joe Kalil (Norwood, Mass.) who netted his first of the season.

The Beacons scored three times in the second half, beginning with a goal from freshman Yuran Teixeira (Praia, Cape Verde), who scored at 54:50 from Morales. Barbosa set up the last two Beacon goals as his shot was saved and senior Giovanni Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored at 69:09 and, at 72:56, he slid a pass to Morales who converted a one-timer.

Castro-Dreher made four saves for UMass Boston. Sekerak made one save in 16:47 before Schallmo stopped five shots over the final 73:13. The Beacons had a 17-15 shot advantage while the Leopards had a slight edge on corner kicks, 4-3.

Wentworth hosts Emmanuel on Wednesday.
