The Price is Right in Men's Soccer's Win over WPI

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Griffin Price's (Allendale, N.J.) second goal of the game, coming with 1:29 remaining in overtime, lifted the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over WPI in non-conference action on Sweeney Field.

With the win the Leopards, who were playing in their second straight double overtime game in a row, snap a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) and improve to 5-6-1 while the Engineers fall to 7-4-0. This was the third straight game in the series which has gone to double overtime.

While shots were even in the early going, WPI nearly went ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute. Sophomore Paul Beatty (Halifax, Mass.) attempted a shot on an open net, however a Wentworth back line defender cleared it out just before it crossed the line.

At the 37:11 mark the Engineers took a 1-0 lead. Beatty sent a pass along the left side to low outside the box where junior Frank Ciliberto (Spencerport, N.Y.) fired a shot which went inside the far post.

WPI came out in the second half and had a pair of bids early, however both were stopped by sophomore Philip Chomicki (Dorchester, Mass.), who came off his line to make the save on both of them.

Price tied the game with 7:21 remaining in regulation as freshman Noah Niles (Saco, Maine) sent a long thru ball across the middle to Price who buried a shot to the right side.

In the early portion of the first overtime, Wentworth had a shot, however a header from senior Joe Kalil (Franklin, Mass.) went high.

Wentworth had four shots in the second overtime, which the fourth one resulting in the golden goal. A foul outside of the box led to a direct kick where Price put the ball over the outstretched arms of senior Connor Hoeckele (Granby, Conn.).

Chomicki made seven saves for Wentworth while Hoeckele stopped eight shots. WPI had a 20-18 shot advantage and a 10-2 edge on corner kicks.
