UMass Boston Holds off Men's Soccer

BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Julio DaSilva (Icara, Brazil) recorded a hat trick, including recording an insurance marker in the 88th minute as the University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 4-2, in non-conference action Thursday night.

Wentworth nearly took a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute of play, however, senior Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) put his shot just over the crossbar. Just over five minutes later, the Beacons had a pair of corner kicks in a 31-second span, but were unable to generate scoring chances on either.

At the 15:42 mark UMass Boston took a 1-0 lead on a goal from senior Erik Murakami (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Murkami fired a long-range shot to the low far post after receiving a pass from senior Edison Marques (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). DaSilva scored his first of the night at the 25:20 mark after putting a shot inside the near post off a feed from sophomore Estevao Gomes (Fogo, Cape Verde).

The Leopards got on the board with 13:35 remaining in the opening half. A foul inside the box led to sophomore Nathan Gosselin (Hudson, N.H.) stepped up and putting home a penalty kick for his second goal of the season. Wentworth had a chance to tie the game just before the first half expired but junior Griffin Price's (Allendale, N.J.) header went wide.

DaSilva put the hosts ahead 3-2 with his second of the contest as he took a pass from Murakami and beat Wentworth junior keeper Philip Chomicki (Dorchester, Mass.) to the far post at 52:54. In the 68th minute, freshman Eddie Smith's (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) attempt to tie the game was punched over the crossbar by junior Sandro van Kuijck (Nunspeet, Netherlands).

Wentworth pulled within one with 6:12 remaining as sophomore Noah Niles (Saco, Maine) took a free kick which was headed by Price. Price's header found Martins who scored his third marker of the season. The Leopards came close to tying the game with just over three minutes left as freshman Alex Moore (Salem, Conn.) served a corner kick towards the box. Junior Drew DeCoste (Somerset, Mass.) got a head on the ball, however, his attempt his the crossbar.

With 2:25 remaining, a foul occurred in the box, giving UMass Boston a penalty kick. DaSilva stepped up and took the kick, which was initially saved by Chomicki, however DaSilva collected the rebounds and sealed the win.

van Kuijck earned the win after making a save in the second half. Junior Aidan Carter (Weymouth, Mass.) had made one save in the first half. Chomicki made three saves in the contest. UMass Boston (2-5-0) had advantages in shots (17-15) and corner kicks (9-6).

Wentworth (3-2-1) is at Emmanuel Monday night.
