Second Half Goal Gives Nichols the Edge Over Men's Soccer

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Gregory Giglio (Deer Park, N.Y.) netted the game's only goal and classmate Patrick Porpora (Westminster, Mass.) made nine saves as the Nichols College men's soccer team edged Wentworth Institute of Technology, 1-0, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Bison improve to 8-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in league play while the Leopards slip to 5-7-1 (1-2-0). The win snapped a three-game series losing streak for Nichols over the Black & Gold.

Both teams had chances early in the contest, however each team's keeper came up with saves to keep the game scoreless. Wentworth had a golden chance in the 26th minute of play, however, junior Griffin Price's (Allendale, N.J.) shot ricocheted off of the crossbar.

Wentworth put three shots on net early in the second half, however, Porpora kept the hosts off the board with three saves. In the 60th minute, Nichols nearly scored but a junior Philip Chomicki (Dorchester, Mass.) save kept it a scoreless game.

Giglio's goal came at 62:17 and came after he came down the middle of the field and into the box where freshman Mannsvile, N.Y.) sent him a cross from the left side. Giglio one-timed the cross into the upper right corner of the net from 10 yards out.

Five of Porpora's nine saves came in the second half as he picked up his third clean sheet of the year. Chomicki made seven saves for Wentworth. Nichols had an 18-16 shot advantage while the Leopards had a 3-2 edge on corner kicks.

Wentworth hosts Western New England on Tuesday night. Nichols travels to Lasell on Monday afternoon.
