UMass Boston Outlasts Men's Soccer

BOSTON, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Boston men's soccer team found the back of the net twice in the second half as the host Beacons defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 2-0, on Monday afternoon.

UMass Boston improves to 1-0-1 on the season while the Leopards slip to 1-1-0 early in the 2019 campaign.

The hosts had a pair of chances in the first half, including on a mini breakaway, however, sophomore Ronnie West (Weymouth, Mass.) came up with stops on both attempts to keep the game scoreless. UMass Boston had a 6-3 shot advantage in the first half with four of the six shots going on frame.

At the 63:21 mark, the Beacons broke the tie when Nilton de Andrade (Fogo, Cape Verde) was fouled in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. Yuran Teixeira (Praia, Cape Verde) stepped to the spot and put the attempt home. Nick Fontana (Marshfield, Mass.) added an insurance marker with 3:06 remaining when he went in alone after a header from de Andrade made its way through Leopard defenders.

Late in the contest junior Nathan Gosselin (Hudson, N.H.) nearly scored for the Black & Gold when he sent a low shot hard along the turf. However, Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) preserved the shutout with his third save of the contest.

West made six saves in the contest as UMass Boston has advantages in shots (15-6 and corner kicks (2-1).

Wentworth renews an old rivalry against former Commonwealth Coast Conference member Colby-Sawyer on Saturday.
