Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season With Win

BEVERLY, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 7-2 win over Gordon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams.

Wentworth swept doubles play as freshmen James Drum (Madison, Conn.) and Sean Murray (North Brookfield, Mass.) took an 8-4 win at number two, seniors Juan Rodriguez (Quito, Ecuador) and Dave Filar (Wolcott, Conn.) won, 8-6, at number one, and junior Andy Chen (New Taipei City, Taiwan) and senior Tim Nguyen (Windsor, Conn.) won at number three, 9-8 (7-3).

The Fighting Scots cut the lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-2 win at number five before Murray rallied after dropping the first set to take a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at number six to push the lead to 4-1. Drum was defeated, 6-4, 6-4 at number two to make it a 4-2 match, however, Filar clinched the match with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-5) win at number three.

Chen dropped the first set of his match, 3-6, before taking the next two sets, 6-2 and 6-4. Rodriguez split the first two sets of his match at number one before winning the tiebreaking set by a 10-7 score to round out Wentworth's scoring.

The Leopards (2-0, 1-0 CCC) are at Curry on Wednesday.
