Smith Named All-Commonwealth Coast Conference

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Student-athletes from eight different member institutions in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) were represented on the 2014 All-CCC Men's Tennis Team. In addition to the all-conference team, four major award winners and the team sportsmanship award winner were also selected.

Nichols graduate student Justin DeLuca was selected as the CCC Player of the Year, while Bison teammate Joan Castillo was tabbed CCC Rookie of the Year. Western New England's Tyler Unwin was honored as the CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Nichols' Paul Brower was dubbed CCC Coach of the Year and Gordon College was the recipient of the Team Sportsmanship Award.

Voting for the All-CCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among CCC men's tennis coaches.

Wentworth Institute of Technology freshman Matthew Smith (Pelham, N.H.) earned Second Team All-CCC honors in singles play after he posted a 6-3 record. In eight of his matches, he played at No. 2 singles and is 6-2, while in the ninth he was slotted at No. 1. Smith was also part of the Leopards' No. 1 doubles tandem that has posted a 4-7 record to date.

The Leopards are 4-7 overall and finished sixth in the CCC with a 3-5 record. Wentworth is at Endicott this afternoon in a CCC Tournament First Round Match. The Gulls defeated the Leopards, 6-3, in the regular-season meeting between the two schools with Smith picking up a win at number two singles in that match.
