Men's Tennis Cruises in Conference Opener

MILTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team swept three doubles matches and picked up five wins in the six singles matches to defeat Curry, 8-1, in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both squads.

With the win the Leopards improve to 1-2 overall while the Colonels fall to 0-3.

Junior James Drum (Madison, Conn.) teamed with freshman Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.) to win, 8-3, at number one doubles and junior Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) teamed with senior Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.) to win, 8-2, at number three doubles. The number two doubles flight was tightly contested with sophomore Nate Schwartz (Chester Springs, Pa.) teaming with classmate James Thomas (Lakeville, Mass.) to win in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (10-8).

Drum used a three-set (3-6, 6-0, 7-5) victory to win at number one, Schwartz won 6-3, 6-1 to win at number two, and Tocco took a 6-1, 6-1 decision at number three.

Senior Dylan Melnik (Raleigh, N.C.) was defeated at number four by a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 score before sophomores Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) and Mike Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) took wins at numbers five and six, respectively. Peter won 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, while Withington prevailed 6-0, 6-0.

Wentworth is at Suffolk on Thursday night while Curry is at Western New England on Saturday.
