Eastern Nazarene Sweeps Men's Tennis

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 setback to Eastern Nazarene in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Sportsmen's Tennis Club Monday evening.

Eastern Nazarene wins its CCC opener and improves to 5-3 overall while the Leopards fall to 1-4 (1-1).

Doubles pay saw the Lions take an 8-1 win at number two as freshman Vladislav Tolmachev (Perm, Russia) and junior Davis Steelman (Darlington, Md.) defeated sophomore Nate Schwartz (Chester Springs, Md.) and junior James Thomas (Lakeville, Mass.).

Senior Sam McKay-Corkhum (Rehoboth, Mass.) teamed with classmate Sam Son (Wilbraham, Mass.) to take an 8-3 win over junior James Drum (Madison, Conn.) and freshman Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.).

Number three doubles saw sophomore Anders Biondi (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and senior Tyler Perron (Plympton, Mass.) take an 8-5 win over junior Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) and senior Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.).

Steeleman bested sophomore Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.), 6-1, 6-2, at number five singles and Perron defeated sophomore Mike Withington (Plymouth, Mass.), 6-2, 6-2, at number six.

Tolmachev used a 6-0, 6-0 win over Drum at number one to give Eastern Nazarene a 6-0 lead before McKay-Corkhum's 6-2, 6-1 win over Schwartz at number two would round out the scoring. Numbers three and four singles were unfinished. Tocco was trailing in the second set after winning the first set over junior Kevin Paterno (Buenos Aires, Argentina) while Biondi was leading in the second set over senior Dylan Melnik (Raleigh, N.C.) at number four after taking the first set.

Wentworth is at Western New England on Tuesday afternoon.
