BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Sophomore Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) and senior Dylan Melnik (Raleigh, N.C.) teamed to win at number three doubles and won at number four and number three singles, respectively, to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology team snap a three-match losing streak with a 7-2 win over Bridgewater State.
With the win the Leopards improve to 2-5 while the Bears fall to 0-3.
Peter and Melnik got the Leopards on the board with an 8-1 win at number three over freshman Zachary Mutti (Peabody, Mass.) and junior Andrew Narciso (East Bridgewater, Mass.). Senior Sean Bleau (North Dighton, Mass.) and junior Michael Deslisle (Berkley, Mass.) evened the match with an 8-5 win at number one over junior James Drum (Madison, Conn.) and freshman Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.). Wentworth took a 2-1 lead after doubles play when junior Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) and senior Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.) defeated sophomore Justin Haley (South Yarmouth, Mass.) and classmate Jacob Frazee (Yarmouth, Mass.), 8-5, at number two.
Peter defeated Frazee, 6-1, 6-1, at number four singles to make it 3-1 before Bleay defeated Drum at number one, 6-3, 6-4. Melnik defeated Haley, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2 at number three while Tocco's 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win over Delisle at number two clinched the match for Wentworth.
Sophomore Mike Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) won at number five over Mutti (6-1, 6-1) and sophomore James Thomas (Lakeville, Mass.) defeated Narciso, 6-1, 6-3, at number six.
The Leopards are at Endicott on Saturday.
