Nichols Sweeps Men's Tennis

POMFRET, Conn. – The Nichols College men's tennis team captured its third straight victory as the Bison defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 9-0, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match played at the Rectory School.

With the win the Bison improve to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 3-7 (2-4).

Nichols took control early in the match, sweeping through the doubles matches with relative ease. In the top flight, sophomore James Smith (Monte Sereno, Calif.) and junior Josh Halpern (Secaucus, N.J.) defeated juniors Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) and James Drum (Madison, Conn.), 8-4.

Senior Andrew Haas (Whitinsville, Mass.) and senior Brandon Roode (Griswold, Conn.) won at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-1 against senior Dylan Melnik (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.). Sophomore Joan Castillo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) and senior Cam Lewis (Bolton, Conn.) rounded out doubles play with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles over sophomore James Thomas (Lakeville, Mass.) and senior Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.).

In singles play Roode took down Drum 6-0, 6-1 in the top flight while Smith defeated Melnik 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Halpern beat Peter 6-1, 6-1 while Castillo defeated Dowd at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

Nichols earned clean sweeps at No. 5 singles and No. 6 singles. Sophomore Jake Zapatka (Wethersfield, Conn.) got the best of Nolan at No. 5 singles while freshman Austin DuBois (Simsbury, Conn.) defeated freshman Doug Avellino (Woodstock, Vt.) at No. 6 singles.

The Bison travel to take on Eastern Nazarene on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Leopards host Roger Williams on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at Regis College.
