Men's Tennis Closes Out Season at Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – The Gordon College men's tennis team clinched a home match in the upcoming Commonwealth Coast Conference playoffs with an 8-1 win over visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology. The Fighting Scots took all three doubles matches to set an early tone before coming up with five of six singles flights. Senior Dan Christensen (Attleboro, Mass.) won in both singles and doubles on, while Sean Nolan (Newport, R.I.) provided the Leopards with their lone win of the match.
 
The Fighting Scots controlled the match from the outset with three victories in doubles. Mike D'Antuono (Mapleville, R.I.) and Peter Godwin (Manchester, Conn.) gave the Scots their first win of the day with an 8-3 triumph at second doubles over Dylan Melnik (Raleigh, N.C.) and Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.). Zach Hall (Sugar Land, Texas) and Mason Casady (Santa Barbara, Calif.) doubled up James Drum (Madison, Conn.) and Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.)  8-4 at the top flight.
 
Joe Daugherty (Norfolk, Va.) and Christensen would defeat Mike Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) and Nolan third doubles, 8-5.
 
Godwin brought Gordon within a point of victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Peter at fourth singles. Casady provided the clinching point with a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Tocco. Hall dished out a similar result to Drum at first singles to push the match to 6-0.
 
Christensen also picked up a straight-set win in singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Withington at the fifth flight. James Hawn (Southborough, Mass.) had to fight through a close two-set match against Melnik at third singles, 6-3, 6-4.
 
Nolan gave the Leopards with their only point of the day at sixth singles. The senior fought off Gordon sophomore George Black (Gloucester, Mass.) in the first set 6-4, before closing it out in the second set 6-3.

Wentworth finishes the season with a 4-9 overall record (2-6 CCC).
