Men's Tennis Gets Back on Winning Track

MILTON, Mass. – Paced by a sweep of doubles play, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak with a 7-2 win over Curry in a Commonwealth Coast Conference match played at the Big Nine Courts.

With the win the Leopards improve to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in league play while the Colonels fall to 0-10 (0-3).

Junior James Thomas (Lakeville, Mass.) and freshman Justin Wright (Wilmington, Mass.) got things started with an 8-3 win over senior Michael Mathieu (Paxton, Mass.) and freshman Daniel Ritucci (Middleboro, Mass.) at No. 3 doubles. Seniors James Drum (Madison, Conn.) and Josh Dowd (Bristol, Conn.) teamed for an 8-5 win at No. 1 over senior Toma Blatchford (Westmont, Que.) and freshman Richie Hefler (Canton, Mass.). At No. 2, juniors Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) and Mike Withington gave Wentworth a 3-0 lead with an 8-6 win over senior Charlie Paltsios (Westford, Mass.) and sophomore Andrew Hegarty (East Islip, N.Y.).

Withington blanked Mathieu, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 to singles increase the lead to 4-0 before Thomas' 6-2, 6-0 win over Ritucci at No. 6. Dowd defeated Hegarty, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3 and Peter needed three sets (6-2, 4-6, 10-1) to defeat Hefler at No. 2. Curry got its lone two points of the match at No. 4 and No. 1. At No. 4, Paltsios defeated Wright, 6-3, 6-2, and at No. 1, Blatchford defeated Drum in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 10-8.

The Leopards host Gordon on Saturday at Regis College.
