Men's Tennis Opens Spring Season With Win Over Salem State

MIDDLETON, Mass. – Paced by a fast start in doubles play the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule with a 7-2 victory over Salem State in a non-conference match played at the Northeast Tennis Center.

With the win the Leopards even their record at 1-1 while the Vikings drop their season opener.

Senior Matthew Smith (Pelham, N.H.) and junior Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.) picked up an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles over Mott Mogren and Mitchell Dyer. Senior Zach Peter (Preston, Conn.) and senior Thinh Dang (Boston, Mass.) upped Wentworth's lead to 2-0 with an 8-6 win over Chen Chen and Noah Hodgkins at No. 2. Freshman Alex Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) and Mun Chet (Braintree, Mass.) notched their first collegiate doubles victory with an 8-6 win over Luke Hodgkins and Dan Holland at No. 3 to complete the sweep.

Dang defeated Luke Hodgkins at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0, before Dyer gave Salem State its first point of the day with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Peter at No. 3. Smith clinched the match for the Leopards with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 over Mogren.

Mularski needed three sets to defeat Noah Hodgkins as he won 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, at No. 5. Holland bested junior Evan Gosselin (Lewiston, Maine) at No. 6, 4-6, 6-4, 12-10, and Tocco defeated Chen, 6-1, 3-6, 10-5, at No. 2.

Wentworth hosts Salve Regina on Tuesday at MIT.
