Men's Tennis Edged in Season Opener

WESTON, Mass. – The 2017-2018 Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis season kicked off with the Leopards dropping a 5-4 decision to Regis in non-conference action at the Regis Tennis Center.

With the win the Pride improve to 4-1 on the season while the Leopards are 0-1.

Regis took a 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Owen Pelissier (Hingham, Mass.) and Tim Miller (North Attleboro, Mass.) got the Pride's first point after topping the Leopard pair of freshman Tyler Hall (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore Alex Mularski (Auburn, Mass.), 8-6, at No. 2. Kyle Dugat (Houston, Texas) and Evan Russell (East Wareham, Mass.) then defeated freshman Tristan Maus (Mansfield, Mass.) and sophomore Mun Chet (Braintree, Mass.) at No. 3, 8-4. However, Wentworth picked up a win at No. 1 as senior Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.) and senior Seng Ly (Lynn, Mass.) bested Johnny Pallotta (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and Nolan Bebarta (Danville, Calif.), 8-5.

Chris Harrow (North Reading, Mass.) put the Pride up 3-1, defeating Tocco 6-0, 6-0 at first singles while Cam Charbonneau's (Guilford, Mass.) result at No. 4 was next to follow, a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Mularski, and gave the hosts a 4-1 lead. At. No. 6, freshman Matt Roberts (Westfield, Mass.) defeated Matt DaRosso, 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, cutting the lead to 4-2. Regis clinched the match at No. 2 as Luke Horton (Bass Harbor, Maine) bested Hall, 6-2, 7-5.

The Leopards picked up wins in the final two matches to account for the close score. Ly defeated Pallotta, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-8, at No. 3 and freshman Jarrett North (Roanoke, Texas) dropped the first set against Mitchell Weiner (Plano, Texas), 4-6, before recovering to take a 6-2 win in the second set and an 11-9 win in the third set tiebreaker.
