Rhode Island College Tops Men's Tennis in Spring Opener

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman Tyler Hall (Framingham, Mass.) picked up a straight-set win at No. 2 singles to garner the sole point for the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team as the Leopards dropped their spring opener, 6-1, to Rhode Island College.

With the win the Anchormen improve to 4-0 on the season while the Leopards fall to 1-2.

Doubles play saw the hosts take a 3-0 lead, beginning with an 8-4 win at No. 2 by junior Chandler Scott (Ashaway, R.I.) and freshman Cam Chadwick (Naragansett, R.I) over freshman Matt Roberts (Westfield, Mass.) and senior Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.). At No. 3 freshman Ethan Hoy (West Warwick, R.I.) teamed with junior Matthew Gambardella (West Warwick, R.I.) for an 8-2 win over freshmen Tristan Maus (Mansfield, Mass.) and Jarrett North (Roanoke, Texas). Rhode Island College completed the sweep with a 9-8 (7-5) win at No. 1 from senior Brett Taggart (North Kingstown, R.I.) and freshman Alex Bourque (North Smithfield, R.I.).

Junior Alan Esposito (Clinton, Conn.) defeated sophomore Alex Mularski (Auburn, Mass.), 6-3, 6-0, at No. 6 singles before Bourque clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Maus at No. 4. Hall bested Taggart, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 2 to put Wentworth on the board before Hoy defeated Roberts, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).

Two singles matches were unfinished due to darkness. Tocco forced a third set at No. 1 after dropping the first set, 6-2. He picked up a 7-6 (7-2) win in the second set and was ahead, 3-2, in the deciding set before the match was called. At No. 3, North dropped the opening set to Gambardella, 7-5, and was leading in the second set, 3-1.

Wentworth is at Suffolk on Thursday.
