Men's Tennis Falls to Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman Jarrett North (Roanoke, Texas) picked up a win at No. 3 singles, however, the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team was defeated by Western New England, 8-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Tuesday night.

With the win the Golden Bears improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 2-4 (0-2).

Western New England took a 3-0 lead after doubles play, starting with an 8-3 win by sophomore David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and junior Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) at No. 1 over seniors Jeff Tocco (Plymouth, Mass.) and Seng Ly (Lynn, Mass.). The No. 2 flight saw sophomore Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Max Gordon (Middleton, Mass.) team up to defeat freshman Tyler Hall (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore Alex Mularski (Auburn, Mass.), 8-3. Freshmen Matthew Russell (Auburn, Mass.) and Peter Stegemann (Falmouth, Maine) won at No. 3, 8-4, over North and classmate Tristan Maus (Mansfield, Mass.).

Sophomore Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) defeated Mularski at No. 6, 6-3, 6-4, before North put Wentworth on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Stegemann. Junior Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) clinched the match for Western New England with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Maus at No. 5.

The final three matches all needed a third set to be decided. At No. 1, Kalmer defeated Tocco, 6-2, 4-6, 10-5, while Gordon defeated Ly at No. 4, 6-4, 2-6, 10-7. Surawski finished the match with a 6-7, 6-2, 10-4 win at No. 2.

Wentworth is at Salem State on Saturday.
