BOSTON, Mass. – Men's indoor track – Wentworth Institute of Technology's 17th varsity sport offering – is set to make its debut this weekend when the Leopards participate at the Fifth Annual UMass Boston Indoor Open, which is being held at the Reggie Lewis Center on Saturday.
Wentworth competed in five meets as a club program last season, concentrating on distance events. This year, head coach Dan Roark, who completed his first season as the Leopards' cross country coach and was named CCC Coach of the Year after guiding the Leopards to their second straight conference championship, will be relying on the depth of the two-time Commonwealth Coast Conference cross country team to carry the squad in distance events as well as adding sprinting events.
"Moving up to the varsity level in indoor track is another big step in the right direction for this program," said Roark. "After back-to-back CCC championships in cross country our distance group will be the core foundation of this team. This will be our first year with a group of sprinters and I am really excited to get a chance to see them develop. We plan on running everything from the 60-meter dash to the 5,000-meter race at various points this season."
Wentworth is slated to compete in six meets with a chance to qualify for two additional ones late in the season.
"It should be a fun first season," added Roark. "I know the guys are itching to get on the track and make an impact right away."
