Indoor Track Kicks Off Season at UMass Boston Indoor Open

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Dan McSolla (Bridgewater, Mass.) took first place in the 5,000-meter run to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology indoor track team open its varsity era with a strong showing at the UMass Boston Indoor Open.

McSolla finished the race with a time of 14:59.46 which was just over a second faster than the second-place finisher, Mitchell Hutton of Brandeis. Four other Leopards competed in the race. Junior Alex Robbins (Mansfield, Mass.) was sixth (15:22.87), junior Patrick Hopkins (Lansdale, Pa.) was 11th (15:39.64), sophomore Josh Gangemi (Norton, Mass.) was 22nd (16:24.32), and senior David Ouellette (Wells, Maine) was 28th (16:53.65).

In the 200-meter dash, freshman Gamael Eugene (Clinton, Mass.) won his heat with a time of 24.45 and classmate Luke Trickey (Westbrook, Maine) was third in his heat with a time of 24.90. Gamael was 55th overall and Trickey was 69th overall.

Sophomore Sam Gerken (Yarmouth, Maine) won his heat in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:08.57 which placed him third overall. Sophomore Jonah Eisman (New York, N.Y.) was second in his heat (1:14.06) which was 27th overall while sophomore Chris Kaberle (Pelham, N.H.) finished fifth in his heat with a time of 1:13.64 which edged Eisman for 26th place.

Freshman Tom Caruso (Mahopac, N.Y.) notched a second-place finish in his heat in the 1,000-meter run (2:49.20), placing him 12th.

In the mile race, junior Zach Howey (Sherwood, Ark.) was 10th in his heat, crossing the line with a time of 4:58.34, however that time placed him 23rd overall.

Trickey, Eugene, Kaberla, and Gerken finished fourth in their heat in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:45.04, which placed them 17th overall. The Leopards' second entry into the relay consisted of Eisman, Caruso, Howey, and sophomore Nathan Ouellette (Wells, Maine). The quartet finished with a time of 4:09.24 which was sixth in their heat and 27th overall.
