Indoor Track Runs at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – The Wentworth Institute of Technology indoor track team kicked off the 2017 calendar year by competing at the USM Open II, hosted by the University of Southern Maine.

Freshman Luke Trickey (Westbrook, Maine) finished sixth in his heat in the 55-meter dash (6.80) to qualify for the finals, where he placed fifth with a time of 6.90. Trickey and sophomore Chris Kaberle (Pelham, N.H.) raced in the 200-meter dash, finishing 10th and 15th, respectively. Trickey had a time of 24.60 while Kaberle ran in a time of 26.50.

Kaberle and sophomore Sam Gerken (Yarmouth, Maine) competed in the 600-meter run. Gerken finished third with a time of 1:26.10 while Kaberle was fourth (1:31.10).

In the 1,000-meter run sophomore Nathan Ouellette (Wells, Maine) and junior Clay Harman (Broad Brook, Conn.) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, as Ouellette finished with a time of 3:05.00 and Harman in a time of 3:13.30.

The mile race was the most successful for the Leopards as juniors Dan McSolla (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Patrick Hopkins (Lansdale, Pa.) finished first and third, respectively. McSolla breezed to his first-place finish with a time of 4:19.20, nine seconds ahead of the second-place runner. Hopkins was a second and a half out of second place, crossing the line in a time of 4:29.70.

Wentworth had three runners compete in the 3,000-meter run. Junior Alex Robbins (Mansfield, Mass.) finished third with a time of 9:05.10. Sophomore Josh Gangemi (Norton, Mass.) was eighth (9:17.20) while senior David Ouellette (Wells, Maine) was 13th (10:11.80).

The Leopard distance medley team of Hopkins (1200), Gerken (400), McSolla (800), and freshman Tom Caruso (Mahopac, N.Y.) (1600) ran uncontested and finished with a time of 11:17.90

Wentworth returns to action next Saturday at the Tufts Invitational.
