Indoor Track Runs Twice on Weekend

BOSTON, Mass. – Paced by junior Dan McSolla's (Bridgewater, Mass.) record-setting run in the 1,000-meter run on Saturday, the Wentworth Institute of Technology indoor track team competed in a pair of meets over the weekend. On Saturday, the Leopards placed 17th out of 27 schools with 10 points at the New England Division III Championships at Tufts University while Sunday's action saw the Black & Gold compete at the USA Track & Field New England Meet at Harvard University.

McSolla collected Wentworth's points as he ran the 1,000-meter run in a time of 2:26.97 (watch video) which not only placed him first but also broke the 23-year old meet record of 2:27.02, set on Feb. 18, 1984, but also broke the facility record of 2:27.87 which was set on Mar. 3, 2002.

Junior Patrick Hopkins (Lansdale, Pa.) ran in the 3,000-meter run and placed seventh in his section with a time of 8:48.42 which placed him 20th overall, out of 25 runners.

The distance medley relay team of freshman Tom Caruso (Mahopac, N.Y.), freshman Luke Trickey (Westbrook, Maine), sophomore Sam Gerken (Yarmouth, Maine), and sophomore Josh Gangemi (Norton, Mass.) were eighth in their section with a time of 10:46.97 which placed them 12th overall, out of 18 teams.

Wentworth's 4x400 meter relay team of McSolla, sophomore Chris Kaberle (Pelham, N.H.), Hopkins, and freshman Gamael Eugene (Clinton, Mass.) was fifth in their section with a time of 3:34.11 (watch video). This time placed them 16th overall, out of 19 teams.

Sunday's action saw Trickey run in the 60-meter dash, placing 27th out of 54 runners with a time of 7.51 seconds.

In the 200-meter dash, junior Jake Skurja (Stratford, Conn.) was fourth (out of 55 runners) after crossing the line with a time of 22.98.

The 400-meter dash saw Kaberle finish 19th out of 33 runners with a time of 54.67.

Gerken ran in the 800-meter run, finishing 27th out of 40 runners with a time of 2:06.70.

Four Leopards were among 59 runners to race in the mile. Senior David Ouellette (Wells, Maine) – in his final collegiate race – was 29th with a time of 4:47.71. Junior Zach Howey (Sherwood, Ark.) ran a time of 5:09.16 to place 48th, sophomore Nathan Ouellette (Wells, Maine) was 52nd with a time of 5:10.68, and junior Clay Harman (Broad Brook, Conn.) was 57th after crossing the line in a time of 5:21.29.

In the 3,000-meter run, Gangemi placed 12th of 30 after he ran a time of 9:26.72.

Wentworth had two entries in the 4x440 yard relay (watch video). Gerken, Caruso, Nathan Ouellette, and Gangemi finished third (3:44.51) while Trickey, David Ouellette, Harman, and Kaberle finished sixth (3:52.22).

Runners who are close to qualifying for the NCAA Division III Championships will be competing in last chance meets over the next two weekends. Further details regarding these will be made available at a later time.
