Men's Volleyball Sweeps Tri-Match

NEWTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team made it four wins in its last five matches as the Leopards defeated both host Mount Ida and Newbury by 3-0 scores in a tri-match played at Mount Ida. The match was originally scheduled for February 10, however had been postponed due to the blizzard that hit the Boston area.

With the two wins, Wentworth improves to 8-4 overall and is 2-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play. Seven of the Leopards' eight wins have come by 3-0 scores.

Against Mount Ida, junior Brain Mann (East Freetown, Mass.) and sophomore Sean Donahue (Lincoln, R.I.) controlled the net in the middle blocking position adding seven kills and two solo blocks each.  Senior Tyler Moriarty (Wilbraham, Mass.) dished out a game-high 28 assists while junior Ross Burdett (Needham, Mass.) added eight digs in the 25-15, 25-14, 25-20 victory.

Mount Ida was led by freshman Justin Rhoden (Corona, Calif.), who had a game-high nine kills on 14 attempts with only two errors.  Senior Spencer Hastings (Orlando, Fla.) tallied eight kills and eight digs for the match while freshman Jimmy Wessel (DeKalb, Ill.) notched a game-high 12 digs.  Senior captain Ricky Oliveira (New Bedford, Mass.) also recorded nine digs.

In Wentworth's second match of the day the Leopards swept Newbury, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-14, 25-14. Leading the Leopards offensively was Burdett with a game high 14 kills on 21 attempts with only one error while sophomore outside hitter Rami Akouri (Fall River, Mass.) tallied 10 kills and a game-high 11 digs. Donahue commanded the net with an impressive four solo blocks and two block assists while Moriarty dealt out 37 assists.

Newbury was led by sophomore Chi Yin Li (Framingham, Mass.) and freshman Tyler Sayne (Tucson, Ariz.) with five kills each with Li also adding a team-high eight assists.

The Leopards host Elms on Tuesday night.
