Men's Volleyball Concludes Play at JWU Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team split a pair of matches on the second day of play at the Johnson & Wales Invitational. Wentworth defeated York, 3-0, before dropping a 3-0 decision to fifth-ranked MIT.

MATCH ONE:  Wentworth 3, York 0
Wentworth received a balance attack on offense and had eight blocks on defense to help propel the Black & Gold to the sweep. The Leopards took the opening set by a 25-15 score and won, 25-18, in the second set, before closing out the match with a 25-17 win in the third set.

As a team the Leopards hit .388 and were led by freshman Sam Pisker (Mullica Hill, N.J.) who had eight kills, three blocks, and hit .467 – making just one error on 15 swings – to go along with a pair of aces. Junior Sean Donahue (Lincoln, R.I.) added seven kills and hit .600 as he made just one error on 10 swings. Freshman Jake Reed (Arvada, Colo.) and senior Ross Burdett (Needham, Mass.) had six kills apiece while senior Brian Mann (East Freetown, Mass.) had five kills. Freshman Collin Ritter (Feeding Hills, Mass.) had 35 assists and two aces while classmate Mike Buonincontra (Shelton, Conn.) had seven digs.

MATCH TWO:  #5 MIT 3, Wentworth 0
In the second meeting between the two teams this season, the Engineers took a 25-20 win in the opening set and would go one to win the next two sets by 25-19 and 25-23 scores, respectively.

Reed had nine kills for the Black & Gold, while Donahue and Mann added five kills apiece. Freshman Alex Potts (Nierville, N.Y.) had five blocks, Ritter had 23 assists and two blocks, Burdett and Pisker had three kills apiece, and Buoninicontra had six digs.

Pisker was named to the all-tournament team after helping the Leopards to a 2-2 record over the two-day event.

Wentworth sits at 14-6 and hosts Mount Ida on Tuesday night at 7:00.
