Men's Volleyball Takes Two GNAC Matches

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Jon Roat (Macedon, N.Y.) recorded 11 kills and hit .429 over two matches to help the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team sweep a Great Northeast Athletic Conference tri-match at Albertus Magnus. The Leopards defeated the host Falcons 3-0 and defeated Mount Ida by a similar score.

With the two wins the Leopards, ranked 13th in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 15 Poll, run their win streak to five and improve to 18-4 overall and 7-1 in GNAC play.

Against Albertus Magnus, the Leopards forced the Falcons to hit for a negative attack percentage in two of the three sets while hitting over .300 in the first and third set. Roat had seven kills and hit .455, sophomore Jake Reed (Arvada, Colo.) had five kills and served seven aces, and freshman Sean Mullen (Longwood, Fla.) and senior Rami Akouri (Fall River, Mass.) had four kills each. Sophomore Alex Potts (Niverville, N.Y.) had three blocks, and classmate Collin Ritter (Feeding Hills, Mass.) had 26 assists.

Potts paced a balanced Leopard attack against the Mustangs as he had eight kills on 12 swings, without committing an attack error. Wentworth set the tone in the first set, hitting .407 as a team, which would be followed by a .500 attack percentage in the second set. The Leopard forced Mount Ida to hit for a negative attack percentage in all three sets.

In addition to Potts' eight kills, sophomore Mike Hansen (Rochester, N.Y.) did not commit an attack error on eight swings and recorded five kills for a hitting percentage of .625 while assisting on three blocks. Reed had five kills and a pair of aces, Roat had four kills, and Ritter had 17 assists and a pair of blocks.

Wentworth continues GNAC play on Tuesday when the Leopards travel to Emmanuel.
