Men's Volleyball Kicks Off Season With Split of Two Matches

MARCY, N.Y. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team opened the 2016 campaign on Friday night by splitting a pair of matches at the SUNY Poly Invitational. The Leopards dropped a 3-1 (17-25, 25-23, 16-25, 23-25) decision to Vassar and defeated Sage Colleges 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-15).

Sophomore Jon Roat (Macedon, N.Y.) led the Leopards with 12 kills, three aces, and seven blocks while classmate Sean Mullen (Longwood, Fla.) had nine kills in the loss.

The Brewers took the first set by a 25-17 score before the Leopards evened the match with a 25-23 win in the second set. Vassar's team attack percentage of .423 in the third set would help give the Brewers a 25-17 win and while both teams would hit less than .100 in the fourth set, Vassar took the match with a 25-23 win.

Junior Jake Reed (Arvada, Colo.) had five kills, junior Alex Potts (Niverville, N.Y.) had four kills and four blocks, junior Mike Hansen (Rochester, N.Y.) had four blocks, sophomore Kevin McPeek (Bethlehem, Pa.) had 27 assists and 12 digs, and junior Mike Rogachefsky (Rochester, N.Y.) had 10 digs.

WENTWORTH 3, SAGE COLLEGES 0
Wentworth took a 25-14 victory in the opening set and never looked back, en route to its first win of the 2016 campaign. The Leopards hit .211 in the opening set and had a match-high .357 in the second frame, where they prevailed by a 25-14 score, and closed out the match with a 25-15 win in the third set, a set where they forced the Gators into a negative attack percentage (-.045).

Potts had seven kills on nine swings for an attack percentage of .667 and also had six blocks in the match. Mullen had four kills and four blocks, and McPeek had 21 assists and five digs to pace a balanced Wentworth attack.

The Black & Gold face Bard (11:00) and No. 4 Nazareth (1:00) on Saturday to conclude tournament play.
