Men's Volleyball Opens Season With Two Wins

MARCY, N.Y. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team kicked off the 2017 campaign with a pair of victories at the SUNY Polytechnic Wildcat Invitational. The Leopards defeated Cairn, 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-13), and the host Wildcats, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-16).

MATCH ONE:  Wentworth 3, Cairn 0
Junior Sean Mullen (Longwood, Fla.) paced the Leopards with nine kills and didn't make an error on 10 swings for a .900 attack percentage while serving four aces. Senior Alex Potts (Niverville, N.Y.) also did not make an attack error, recording six kills on 10 swings.

The Leopards took the opening set after hitting .450 and hit a match-high .583 in the second set.

Junior Ollie Oshman (Pennington, N.J.) had seven kills, senior Mike Hansen (Rochester, N.Y.) had five kills and three blocks, freshman Ryan Engel (Floral Park, N.Y.) had four kills and hit .667, junior Collin Ritter (Feeding Hills, Mass.) had 31 assists and five digs and senior Mike Rogachefsky (Rochester, Mass.) had five digs. As a team the Black & Gold hit .484

MATCH TWO:  Wentworth 3, SUNY Poly 0
Wentworth's hot hitting carried over into its second match of the night as the Leopards hit .477 as a team. Potts paced the offense with nine kills on 11 swings for a .727 attack percentage to go along with a pair of blocks. Senior Jake Reed (Arvada, Colo.) had 10 kills, a pair of blocks, and hit .474 while Mullen had seven kills, five aces, and six digs.

Oshman chipped in with five kills and two blocks, Hansen had three kills and two blocks, Ritter had 26 assists, two aces, six digs, and two blocks, and Rogachefsky had eight digs.

Wentworth has a pair of matches against fellow nationally ranked foes to wrap up tournament play Saturday. At 11:00 the Leopards play No. 8 Vassar and at 3:00 the Black & Gold battle against No. 7 Nazareth.
