Strong Hitting Propels Men's Volleyball to 3-0 Sweep at Colby-Sawyer

NEWPORT, R.I. – Freshman Drew Potter (Towson, Md.) put down a match-high 11 kills and the Leopards hit .358 as a team with a season-high 12 aces to stay undefeated in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 3-0 sweep at Colby-Sawyer College on Thursday evening.

Wentworth bounces back from a hard-fought setback at MIT last night and improves to 7-3 overall and unblemished in GNAC play at 4-0. Colby-Sawyer drops below .500 overall in its inaugural season at 5-4 and remains in the hunt for its first conference win at 0-3.

Potter hit .474 with his season-high 11 kills, and booked four aces, ranking second among the Leopards with nine this season. Classmate Ryan Murray (Westfield, Mass.) hit .750 to finish with seven kills on eight attempts, while sophomore Kevin Devine (Charlotte, Vt.) chipped in with six kills. First-year setter Connor Adams (Budd Lake, N.J.) collected 32 assists.

Chargers' first-year Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.) had four kills and four digs for Colby-Sawyer. Playing in his first match of the season, junior Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) contributed four kills and a solo block. First-year AJ Gnieski (Needham, Mass.) registered 11 assists and a couple of kills.

Wentworth posted 11 kills on .444 hitting to take the first set by storm, 25-12. Murray had four kills for the Leopards in the frame, while four different Chargers collected a kill including sophomore Nate Trevino (Boerne, Texas). The Black & Gold picked up another 11 kills in the second set behind a five-kill performance from Devine, leading the Leopards to the 25-16 set win.

Colby-Sawyer took a 2-0 lead to begin the third set and stayed close to force a Wentworth timeout with the Leopards holding just a 9-8 lead. Wentworth scored the next four points to take a 13-8 lead and this time forced the Charges to call a timeout. Coffey connected on a kill to stop the run after the break, but a pair of Potter kills put the Leopards in front 15-9. With the visitors leading 23-16, Potter added another two kills to give Wentworth the set and the match.

Wentworth closes its four-game road swing on Tuesday with a 6:00 p.m. match at No. 10 Endicott.
